Sustainable Benefits of Dry Products in Agriculture

Stepan Agricultural Solutions has developed a toolbox of high active, dry products that can help address severalsustainability concerns in the agricultural industry.

Reduce Water Usage and Transportation Emissions in Agriculture with Dry Products

The Trend

Growing environmental concerns and resource scarcity are motivating crop protection companies to adopt more sustainable products and processes. Two major sustainability concerns for the agricultural industry are water shortages and increased emissions during the production and transportation of agricultural products. These issues must be addressed as growers search for new ways to optimize their yields to support the needs of a growing world population.

Stepan Agricultural Solutions is constantly monitoring market trends like these to anticipate the needs of our customers and the demand of the overall market. Our team has developed a toolbox of high active, dry products that can help address these sustainability concerns in an innovative way.

Emulsifiable concentrates (ECs) are the most widely used formulation type in the crop protection industry and are generally composed of oily or waxy active ingredients solubilized in non-polar hydrocarbon solvents. Surfactant emulsifiers are required to generate a stable emulsion and ensure homogeneity in EC formulations for optimum performance, and to reduce pesticide usage through improved coverage on leaf surfaces. One of the most frequently used technologies for this purpose is the anionic, oil-soluble calcium salt of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid, commonly referred to as CaDDBSA. Used in combination with nonionic surfactants, CaDDBSA can provide excellent emulsification.

The Challenge

CaDDBSAs are typically provided in a solvent carrier, and the type and loading level of solvents can vary. Commercial products contain anywhere from 30 – 70% solvent, such as 2-ethyl hexanol, butanol or various aromatic solvents. A liquid, flowable form helps with easier handling, but the presence of high levels of solvent can lead to environmental, health and safety (EHS) issues related to handling, flammability, human and environmental toxicity, and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. In addition, some crop protection formulations and active ingredients are more sensitive to the presence of solvents, further limiting the utility of CaDDBSA.

The Solution

One way to address the sustainability concerns of these crop protection products is to examine the profile of the co-formulants that are necessary to deliver the active ingredients. Co-formulants that are highly concentrated and reduce or eliminate unnecessary additives are becoming more desirable and can allow more sustainable formulations to be developed.

Stepan’s formulation experts developed NINATE® 100L, a new co-formulant that is 100% active and does not contain any solvent or additives, to address this emerging trend.

Our team designed this product to:

  • enable a higher loading of active ingredients by eliminating solvent from the product;
  • reduce emissions during transportation per unit of active ingredients;
  • reduce packaging and transportation costs;
  • reduce water usage during the manufacturing process; and
  • reduce potential hazards to health and the environment due to the absence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

As a dry flake or powder, NINATE 100L is a valuable addition to the formulator’s toolbox because it provides a calcium salt suitable for use in dry formulations and standard solvent-based systems. It also reduces potential incompatibility that is often associated with residual solvent in alternative calcium salt co-formulants.

NINATE 100L gives agricultural formulators the flexibility to formulate with a “green” solvent of choice, such as a soybean oil-based methyl ester like STEPOSOL® ME instead of an aromatic solvent. The image below shows how well NINATE 100L solubilizes in STEPOSOL ME. Once solubilized, NINATE 100L has been shown to behave equivalently to CaDDBSA delivered in a carrier solvent.

The water used to produce the product also can be recovered in the drying process and reused in the production of other batches. Stepan uses an optimized drying method that has been found to improve yield and reduce waste during production.

NINATE 100L also makes transportation easier because it is non-flammable and free of VOCs. Solvent-free materials such as NINATE 100L can also help reduce fugitive emissions. Unlike traditional solvent-based systems, more actives can be transported with each shipment, reducing the amount of emissions per unit and addressing the emissions concerns within the agricultural industry.

Sustainability is one of our core values at Stepan. As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, we support specific targets of the Sustainable Development Goals for which our organization has a significant positive impact. Today, 75% of Stepan’s R&D investment is dedicated to sustainable processes and products. Innovative products like NINATE 100L contribute to these goals and to global sustainability priorities broadly.
