November 10, 2022

Stepan Company is delighted to be included in the 2022 edition of the Singapore Chemicals, Ingredients and Materials Reports series. Stepan continuously strives to deliver innovative products from responsibly sourced materials that promote energy efficiency, improved health and wellness, and reduced environmental impact. This commitment well-positions Stepan in the value chain as the interest in bio-based and sustainably advantaged ingredients, and the push to expand their capabilities to address consumers’ needs continues to grow.

This report is a comprehensive guide to Singapore's full, chemical industry value chain – from producers, to distributors, engineering companies, service and technical providers, either based in or with a regional headquarter in Singapore serving the Asia Pacific region.

Stepan has made ongoing investments in the technology and production capabilities for bio-surfactants made from vegetable feedstocks, starting with a 2020 acquisition of Logo Technologies LLC's NatSurFact business, a novel fermentation process for rhamnolipids, a class of bio-surfactants. In 2021, Stepan acquired a fermentation plant in Lake Providence, Louisiana, U.S., with an expected capacity of 20,000 tons per year of bio-surfactants.

Stepan's General Manager, Surfactants – Asia David Ho noted that market trends helped drive these investments. “Within the consumer market, which includes home care, personal care and industrial institutions, we see a strong preference for a natural and minimalist approach. People seek formulations that are biodegradable, plant-based and gentle to the skin as well as the environment," Ho explained. "Out of concern for the environment, consumers are asking for waterless formulations, going back in time to when powder detergent and solid soaps were the norm. Biodegradability is another big trend, especially when it comes to hair conditioners or moisturizers.

In order to provide consumers more innovative and sustainable solutions, Stepan dedicates 80% of its global R&D resources to sustainable products and practices.

Stepan is fueled by the science of tomorrow to help our customers succeed today. With a resolute focus on operating responsibly and with integrity, Stepan strives to be a valuable partner for growth.
